ROTORUA TOURNAMENT END OF SECTION PLAY AUCKLANDERS IN „ SEMI-FINALS [HV TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Thursday

At the conclusion of section play tliis afternoon seven teams qualified for the final matches to decide the holder of tlio Rotorua Bowling Club's open rinks championship for the 1938 season. The successful rinks were: —Ponsonb.v (Letham), Carlton (do Launay), and Botorua (Bakes), each of which secured nine wins, and .Auckland (Walker), Mount Eden (Purdy), jHallyburton-Johnstono (Sharp) and Matamata, (Stewart). At the close of the first round of post-section play, Ponsonby, Matamata and Carlton had been eliminated, leaving four teams to meet in the semi-linals to-morrow morning.

The draw lor the semi-finals is as follows:—Kotorua v. Auckland; HallyburtonJohnstorie v. Mount Eden. The winners of these matches will meet in the deciding game for the title in the afternoon. In the two concluding rounds of section play there were again several surprises. The most unexpected of these was the defeat of Letham (I'onsonby) by Johnson (Gisbornc), who previously had registered only two wins. I'onsonby up to that stage luid the distinction of being the only unbeaten rink in the tournament. 11l section. A there was another surprise when Purdy (Mount Eden) went down to Ritchie (Carlton), bringing Auckland (Walker) into the reckoning as a possible winner Of the section. Do Launay (Carlton), with one loss and two wins to-day, was an easy qualifier and winner of section D. Rotorua is represented in the qualifiers by Collins, French, Budd and Pakes,%ho throughout the tournament have suffered only one loss.
