LIVING CONDITIONS

Sir —I object to Mr. W. Jarretta criticism of this country concerning "Betting and Beer," as in Saturday s Herald. It is no part of a visitor to imagine that our country ought to bo run in such a way that the pleasure of the visitor and the extraction from him in divers ways of his pieces of eight, are to be the dec ding factors. The country must bo run. surely, for the good of the permanent residents, not for the passing visitors, where tho two come into opposition. Wo here desire, at least, to maintain our standards. Our laws should consider the moral welfaro of the inhabitants. I hope we shall continue to resist all-efforts to sacrifice what is right for what is perhaps pleasant and expedient, The facts as stated, that tiio hours encourage drunkenness by causing fast drinking, ' are not substantiated by the fact that most drunkenness and consequent disorderly behaviour oct-nrs on a Saturday. Tatuanui. R. W. Mayson.
