UNEMPLOYED RETURN
MONTH'S REDUCTION 311 4178 AWAITING PLACEMENT [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPOBTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday The latest unemployment return, for the period ended January 15, 1938, was released to-day by the Minister of Employment, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. The return, which' includes those on the register who are for health or other reasons unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 15,360 as against' the corresponding figure for January, 1937. The reduction compared with the figures for December last is 311. The details are set out below: —
Dec. 18 Jan. 15 1037 1038 Registered, but not on relief .. ... 737 1,051 On sustenanco awaiting placement .. . . 4,201 4,178 On scheme No. 5 relief 3,33(5 2,8'27 Totals .. 8,307 8,056 On sustenance, totally unfit for emplaymcnt for health or other reasons, but being afforded relief from the Employment Promotion Fund as at December 18 . . .. 8,000 For the four-weekly period under review, the expenditure from the fund under the heading of promotion of employment, as distinct from relief expenditure, is estimated at £178,415, as against £207,000 in the previous period.
