NEW LYNN BOROUGH

gj ri —j n the Herald of June 29 you publish a paragraph regarding the borough of New Lvnn and the possibility of a reduction in the rates. As a ratepayer of this district, I feel I must protest against Mr. G. Lawson's statement that "the rating of the borough would compare favourably With that of any other suburban area enjoying similar amenities." In my opinion, there is no other district in Auckland which shows such lack of progress as New Lynn. Tn proof of this I would suggest that Mr. Lawson take a walk down Wattle Street, thence into Miro Street. There are neither roads nor pavements, and the unfortunate residents flounder around in a quagmire of mud and pot-holes. People have been living in these streets and paying rates for ]0 years and more, and yet they have not been given a pathway to walk on — ant ] when they ask that something be done they are always met with the same tale, "the borough cannot afford." There is not even a collection of refuse —all that is done in this direction is that once per month empty tins arc collected. Regarding rates—my rates are in the vicinity of £8 yearly and that is the average. Compare Now Lynn with Avondale —this district pays less rates, has neat roads and pavements, and presents a cheerful and prosperous aspect to the passer-by. Perhaps some dav the Auckland City Council will take over New Lynn and then something may he done for the ratepayers of tho district. New Lynn.
