RESCUE AT SEA

MOTOR-VESSEL KARAMEA [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Juno 19 The Shaw, Savill and Albion motorvessel Karamea recently picked up 22 survivors from a Danish vessel, the Victoria, after a collision in which the \ ictoria and a, J3ritish ship were involved. The Victoria, which was bound from Hull for Copenhagen with coal, was in collision with the Cory Colliers' ship Cormount near the Dowsing Lightship, oil Spurn Head. The Victoria [ listed and capsized in 20 minutes. Tlio j accident was seen from the Karamea. The survivors described how the presence of mind of an officer on the Victoria prevented a laden lifeboat rom being thrown into the sea. As the lifeboat was being launched it became jammed and the officer quickly whipped out a knife and severed the rope. The survivors, who included Mrs. Hansen, wife of the chief engineer, and a passenger, were little the worse for their

adventure, except that Mrs. Hansen sprained one of her ankles. Mrs. Hansen, who was the only woman on board, was attended by a doctor at Newcastle.

The survivors were all taken to the Sailors' Home at Newcastle. Mr. J. Ncilson, the second officer of the _ Victoria, _ stated: "There was no panic. The ship took a list and slowly capsized a few minutes after we got clear."
