ANCIENT BURIED LOGS

CHRISTCHURCH DISCOVERY Fourteen feet below the surface in Durham Street. Christchurch, two wellpreserved logs—one of manuka and one of what is presumed to be rinni—were found by men excavating for a new stormwater drain. These logs, which wero found in river silt, have been examined by experts and are considered to bo about 1000 years old. The logs were from 12 to 1-1 inches through, and lay across the drain, so that the workmen had to chop a section out of each, leaving the rest in position. Parts of them have now been dressed by Mr. Charles W. Barrel], who is a collector of. specimens of New Zealand woods. The manuka retains its normal hardness. weight and colour, but the piece which is presumed to be rinni, is very dark in colour, being almost black. Another opinion is that this may be black pine with its natural colour changed through being underground so long.
