ORDEAL FOR CLIMBER

TWO HOURS ON CLIFF LEDGE A boy clinging for his life on a nai*row lodge on the cliffsido, nearly 3000 ft. .from the ground, while two men tried to reach him with a rope. . . . This was a dramatic scene witnessed by hundreds of peoplo at Folkestone Warren recently. The boy, John ITately, aged 13, of Folkestone, was stranded perilously on the cliff for more than two hours before lie was rescued. He was exhausted, and his legs were cut and bruised. Ho had been climbing the dill's, which are about GOOl't. high, when his foothold became precarious owing to loose chalk. Gaining a narrow ridge of chalk, he lost his nerve and could not move either up or down. He had left a companion at the bottom, who, hearing Hately's shouts, gave the alarm. P. C. Brittaln obtained a rope which was held by other people at the top of the el ill' while ho and Mr. William Edwards, a Folkestone Corporation employee, made their way down to_ the boy. Gaining a foothold, they pulled the rope down the cliff, tied one end round Hately and lowered him to another man on the ground. A young man who was camping in the Warren previously tried to reach Hately, but finding it impossible to do so, ho remained near him to givo the boy confidence until the rescuers could reach him.
