TIPPING GEAR
HYDRAULIC TYPE A type of hydraulic tipping gear which allows a generous body space has been fitted to six Bedford short-wheel-base 3-tonners supplied to an Edinburgh firm. The bodies are steel lined, with a door space of Bft. Gin. by 6ft. 9in., and the sides are hinged and detachable. The three-way tipping gear is power operated. As the ram rises, it carries up a stirrup, on which is pivoted at its lowest point a lifting arm. Rollers on the top of this arm engage with the steel runners under the body, while the bottom cranked end of the arm pivots on the member housing the ram. To give a steep angle for side or end tipping, the travel of the ram is only eight inches. By releasing a catch and swinging the lifting arm the direction of tip is selected. Only one minute, it is claimed, is taken for a SOcwt. tip, and the body is lowered again by opening a relief valve.
