AN IRISH ESSAY
Speaking in London recently at a meeting of the Invalid Children's Aid Association, Canon J. 0. Hannay—- " George A. Birmingham," the novelist —said ho had once had to judge an essay competition for schoolchildren. They were Irish, and the subject was, cot unnaturally, the pig. Among the essays was this golden sentence concerning the pig: "Ho gathereth straws in his mouth and runneth on errands of cheerfulness." Canon Hannay added: " I gave the prize to that child, although never from that day to this have I understood what he meant. It seemed to bo a most beautiful sentence and to convey a most beautiful idea to my mind."
