ROAD IMPROVEMENTS
PROPOSALS IN OTAHUHU RELriLF SUBSIDY GRANTED Approval of the Otabuhu Borough Council's proposal to reconstruct the surface of Princes Street, over a length cf 36 chains, and construct storm-water drainage in Golf Avenue as unemployment relief works on a subsidy basis was received at the council meeting on Thursday. The Unemployment Board's officer in Auckland stated in a letter that the two schemes had been approved on condition that standard wages were paid to relief workers employed for a 40hour we»k. The Mayor, Mr. S. R. Petrie, said the labcur cost of the Princes Street job had been estimated by the foreman at £169. The Unemployment Board would grant a subsidy equal to half the wages, and employment could thus be found for six men for eight weeks on full time. The total cost of the job was estimated at £456, and the actual f-ost to the council would be about £370. On the motion of the Mayor the estimate for the job was referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. Consideration of the other scheme was deferred. . , , , Advicu was received that a further grant otf £2-500 for the employment of men on No. 5 scheme in Sturges Park had been authorised by the Unemployment Board.
