SEAMEN'S WELFARE

VICE-REGAL INTEREST INSTITUTIONS INSPECTED SAILORS' HOME AND MISSION Visits of inspection were paid yesterday by the Governor-General, Viscount Gahvav, and Viscountess Galway, to the Auckland Sailors' Home and the Flying Angel Missions to Seamen, Sturdee Street. On arrival at the Sailors' Home Their Excellencies, who were attended by Sir Standish O'Gradv Roche, A.D.C., were met by the president of the home, Mr. D- 13. Patterson, and members of the council, including Mr. Ernest Davis, Mayor of Auckland, and Mr. C. G. Mncindoe, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board. After an inspection of the home, Their Excellencies were entertained at morning tea. Pleasure at the interest shown in the home by Their Excellencies was expressed by Mr. Patterson, who briefly outlined the history of the home since its foundation half a century ago through a munificent bequest by Mr. Edward Costley. "Considerable assistance has also been given by other citizens of Auckland, and the home has always enjoyed the patronage of the Governor-General," said Mr. Patterson. Particular assistance had been given by Earl Jellicoe, who obtained a grant from the King George fund for sailors, without which it would be difficult to continue the home. In addition, help was received by way of voluntary contributions, as what the men who availed themselves of the home naid for accommodation was not sufficient to maintain it.

Congratulations on the attainment of the jubilee of the home were extended by Lord Galway. "Lady Galway and I are very pleased at the opportunity of having a look round the home, and we know the wonderfully fine work you have been doing in the past," said His Excellency. "We shall do anything we can to further the cause, and to assist the good work that you are doing with the assistance of citizens.''

At the Flying Angel Missions to Seamen, Their Excellencies were received by the chaplain, the Rev. H. K. Vickery, and members of the board of management, including Mr. Macindoe, Captain H. H. Sergeant, harbourmaster, and Mrs. Preston Chambers, president of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild. Their Excellencies inspected the social hall, the club rooms and the chapel.
