ROAD RACES IN AUCKLAND BYRNES' FINE PERFORMANCE NEW RECORD ESTABLISHED Over 80 riders competed in the road events conducted on Saturday by the five amateur cycling clubs in Auckland. All clubs experienced ideal racing conditions. The junior event of the Manukau Club provided E. Raper, off Im, with a double victory. Ho was racing for tho last occasion as a junior. Raper also gained fastest and record tirno when he covered the 15 miles in 43rn 19s. Tho outstanding feature of a fast-rtin race was the performance of M. P. Byrnes in the senior event of 15 miles. Riding off scratch with A. W. D. Robinson and L. 11. Dwight, ho caught the field of 22 riders on the sixth and final lap. Eight participated in the final run for tho line, but Byrnes went into Die lead early and maintained his position to win by two lengths from S. J. Baird, 30s, who also rodo brilliantly. Tho most remarkable feature of Byrnes' success was his gaining of fastest timo with the record figures of 41m lis. It was his first acquaintance with tho Avondale §outh circuit, which is a difficult and strenuous course. He reduced Robinson's record ty no fewer than 47 seconds. Juniors' Good Time Tho Auckland Club's junior race of 11£ miles at To Atatu was won by A. 11. Jeeves off 6m 10s by nearly a minute. Again C. Melville, scr, proved himself ■ the best of tho juniors by securing timo honours in 33rn 6s, which time compares very favourably with that of seniors over the distance. Previously placed second in three road events G. Patrick, 4m, scored his first, road victory when he won tho senior 8% miles race by over 300 yds. from G. Jeeves, 4m 455, winner of the junior race the previous week. Fastest time was returned by A. W. Pinker, scr, in 24m. Pinker won the club's 11£ miles road championship event last month. A comfortable win was gained by 11. MacGregor, 6rn, in the Tamaki Club's miles senior race. His actual riding time was only 2m 20s slower than that of G. Walters, who finished second off scratch and clocked the good time, considering the rough nature of tho course, of 55m 10s. In tho junior race L. Fry, 4m, and J. Kinzley, lm 30s, were first and second respectively. Kinzley rodo a great race and registered fastest time in 34m 355. Tho Takapuna Club held a long race of 30 1-5 miles' for its seniors, (f. Williams, who first came into prominence when ho finished an easy second in the last Auckland Centre race of 23 miles, won the event from the 2m 30s mark. For tho fourth successive occasion the scratch rider,. Y. S. Blomfield, gained fastest time in 86m Is and, in addition, finished second. Pinfold Improves A close and exciting contest resulted in tho Papatoetoo Club's 16 miles raco for time honours between S. Pinfold, scr, and I. C. Bellini, of the Manukau Club, off 30s. Pinfold covered (lie distance in 41m 48s and defeated Bellini by 7 seconds. Pinfold is one of the most improved road riders this year and in the last Auckland Centre event rode from scratch to gain second fastest time. Considerable interest is attached to the entry of R. Ulnier.and S. Aldridgo, of the Poneke Amateur Cycling Club, of Wellington, for the next open road race to bo conducted-by tho Auckland Cycling' Centre over a 40 miles course on August 6. Ulmer represented Wellington at the last Dominion championships at the Auckland Domain and also competed at tho Olympic trials at Wanganui when ho finished second to 11. R. Dwight, of Auckland, in the sprint event Ulmer is the champion nnpaced rider of tho Poneke Club for this season. WAGES OF FOOTBALLERS UNEMPLOYMENT IN SUMMER It is estimated that, because so many of the Association football clubs in Great Britain are unable to pay summer wages, a thousand professional Soccer players are out of employment, in the. English Football League alone. In some instances tho dole has been refused to players on the ground that football is a seasonal occupation, and an awkward, problem has arisen.
