CHAMPIONSHIP OF KENT E. D.. ANDREWS LOSES FINAL [FROM OUIt OWN correspondent} LONDON, Juno 17 Ec D. Andrews, of New Zealand, and E. R. Avory qualified for the final of tlie men's singles in the Kent lawn tennis championships at Beckenham. In the semi-firiais Andrews beat E. C. Peters, 6—3, 6—2; E. Pi. Avory beat R. J. j Ritchie, 6—4, B—6. Jn the final the New Zealander was rather surprisingly ; beaten by E. C R. Avory, 6—l, 6—4. In- j deed, Andrews could do nothing right except in a few spasmodic games in the j second set. Avory played a steady and accurate game, and the match was dull. The Times critic proceeds:—Both players started uncertainly, but both held their services, with Avory venturing more and > trying out his own and his opponent's capabilities, while Andrews contented himself with trying to find >i length and not going out for the winning stroke. For the next seven games the match was something of a procession, with Andrews being unable to do anything. Throughout the match Andrews tried to dominate tho game from the net, which is his usual typo of play, but lie seemed to lack all confidence, and time after time ho would volley the ball three times only for Avory to return his easy smashes and eventually pass him down tho side-line. When he was led 2—o in the second set, having lost the first, in which he won only one game, Andrews at last rallied and held his service. He went on to win the next two games, which gave him a 3—2 lead. This was, however, only a temporary check, for Andrews again seemed to lack faith in himself, and Avory, playing with greater determination than ever, proceeded to catch him up and pass him to lead 4—3. Then Andrews made his final effort. ITo broke through Avory's Fervice to level tho score at 4—4, and then at the crisis ho played so badly that Avory continually made winning strokes oft his drives. Avory won the next two giimcs quite easily for tho sot and match.
