LOSS ON RACING

AUCKLAND CLUB'S SEASON • SUM OF £2683 FOR YEAR NECESSITY FOR ECONOMY A loss of £2683, which includes £2OOO balance of improvements written off and £54 written off dining room plant, is shown in tho annual report of tho Auckland Racing Club. Tho report says that the result may be considered quite satisfactory, considering tho difficult times prevailing, and the need for keeping up prize money to as high a level as possible in order to encourage owners and breeders to continue participation in tho sport. At the four raco meetings held by the club £41.740 was disbursed in prizo money, which included £340 subscribed by owners'as sweepstakes. Tho racing at each meeting was excellent, the fields being well up to the average both in quality and numbers. Tho financial outlook for tho forthcoming season still gave cause for grave doubt, and it would be necessary to again curb expenditure. Tho committee, however, felt their responsibility .to owners, and would endeavour to provide prizo money that would ensure f tho best horses being seen in competition at Ellerslie.
