DOWNPOUR AT WHANGAREI.

NEARLY THREE INCHES IN DAY. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WHANGAREI. Tuesday. Heavy rain fell in tho Whangarei district yesterday and at frequent intervals last night. Early this morning the rain was so heavy that the gutters were hardly coping with the exceptional volume of water. Water to the depth of several inches was lying in places acros:-; the roadway.

The sewerage works presented a sorry spectacle this morning, with the spoil from the trenches reduced to a mass of sticky yellow clay and the trenches partly filled with the water running from the streets. Yesterday the taxicabs on Bank Street had to park on the vacant section adjoining, owing to the danger of the vehicles skidding in the moist clay in the necessarily narrow roadway. The creeks are all swollen and yesterday the Waiaroahia Stream rose approximately 18in. in an hour. The rainfall for the 24 hours ended at nino o'clock to-day was 2.94 in., makinjr a total of 3.47 in. for the past 48 hours.
