RACING.

PRINCE HUMPHREY.

J QUESTION OF IDENTITY.

DOUBT RAISED IN AUSTRALIA

;THa PURCHASE. OF TWO COLTS.

Australian i.nd N.Z. Press Association (Received May 7, 7 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 7

Inquiry is being made by the Australian Jockey Club into the credentials of the racehorse Prince Humphrey, winner of the A.J.C. Derby at Randwick. and now in New Zealand. The secretary stated that the matter would come before the committee at its meeting on Thursday. It is Elated liiat Prince Humphrey has been confounded with Cragsman, a horse of little turf value. The Derby winner, it is contended, "is not by Duke Humphrey from y'tic-pherd Princess, but id by Duke Humphrey from Princess Hazel. The authority for I'ie statement, is R. Tate, who, as manager the Woodlands Stud, bred two colts from the xnatings indicated and declares Prince Humphrey is Princess Hazel's colt. It is not suggested that tne erior is anything but the result of an uufortunate mixin.'. Princess Hazel's colt was. it 13 said, r whole bay with black points. This description fits Prince Humphrey, and agrees with the markings given on registration iojins here and in New Zealand. A reference to the catalogue of the Woodland's stud dispersal sale reveals the fact ihat the Princess Hazel colt was branded ■with an inverted V over B 011 tho near shoulder and the number 5 over 13G on tho rear thigh, while the Shepherd Princess cult was branded with an inverted V over 1; on the near shoulder.

Mr. 11. ft. Mackenzie, the New Zealand sportsman, who purchased the two colts, jjasscd Prince Humphrey 011 to Mr. 0. G. iMacindoe, but the pedigrees, it is said, .■were mixed and Mr. Macindoe has in Prince Humphrey tho colt, from Princess Hazel, under the impression that it is the progeny oi Shepherd Princess.

At the dispersal of the Woodlands Stud. JCew South Wales, about three years ago* Mr. H. R. Mackenzie purchased on behalf ®t the Auckland Stud Company two yearling colts by Duke Humphrey from Princess Hazel and Shepherd Princess, respectively. In due course he youngsters arrived in Auckland and some time later the fcShepherd Princess colt, now known to fame tis Prince Humphrey, was sold to Mr. 0. CI. Macindoe through his trainer. J. T. Jamieson. The other colt is still in the possession of his purchaser and is known as Cragsman.

Apparently on th? statement of Mr. 15. O'ate, who wns manager of the Woodlands Suicl, a doubt has been raised whether Prince Humphrey is the Shepherd Princess *e!t. It is considered that the colts have Veen unfortunately confused .and that 'he JJcrby winner's real dam i 9 Princess Hazel. •How auyon« with any knowledge of horses could confuse the uvo is difficult to understand, as they are so totally dissimilar. Prince Humphrey is a whole bay with black lioints, whereas Cragsman has a white blaze anrl other white markings. It seems highly improbable that an experienced racing man like Mr. Mackenzie could make such an error after personally purchasing the colts and he stateu tba' no mistake was possible. Regarding the Fale of Prince Humphrey liere. J. T. Jamieson. who chose the colt lor Mr. Macindoc says the horse was one of three he inspected at the Auckland Stud Company's farm and was represented as the Shepherd Princess colt. „"When the sale was completed the registration of the colt was effected in. the usual manner and his connections have no reason to believe that he is siiiy other than the Shepherd Princess colt. In Ihc meantime further details will be awaited M:th interest.
