UNEMPLOYMENT.
Sir, —This is a subject that needs to be settled in a country such as this. If the people of New Zealand only realised the suffering, the misery, that unemployment brings to the father, mother, sons and daughters of those unable to find work, there would be something doing. At present it is all talk, which goes for nothing, sounds all right, but does not fill the hungry or clothe the needy. I am not an advocate for the indolent, lazy people. I speak for those who, through no fault of their own, cannot find any work to do where they can earn a living. I am told, and I believe it is true, because I have been over a lot myself, that there are 7,000,000 acres of idle land in the North Island. What is wrong with this land ? Most of it is good land, more than half of it is Crown land. It is an absolute disgrace' to the Government and the people of New Zealand that this country is losing so much money every year. I could find 20,000 men five years' work on that land, and make a profit. What is the matter with the Government is that it does not know how to do it, and will not admit it. 63 Years In New Zealand.
