TECHNICAL STUDENTS.
THE QUESTION OF FEES.
NO INCREASE PROPOSED
NEW MINISTER'S DECISION.
Stating he had given the matter careful consideration, the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, advised the Auckland Education Board yesterday that no increase was to be made in the fees paid by students attending technical schools. This decision will bring general satisfaction to technical schools, as the former Minister, Mr. R. A. Wright, had notified his intention of increasing the fees.
About 18 months ago, the New Zealand Technical Education Association was advised by the then Minister that an increase had been thought desirable, and a revised scale of fees was submitted for its consideration. The association recommended that there should be no increase. The association was again approached by the Minister, and again came to the same decision. It was considered an increased charge would press harshly on the apprentice type of student, and that in any case what increase in revenue was obtained would not justify the change. Mr. Wright refused to entertain the representations of the association, and recently notified his intention to enforce the proposed new fees. When Mr. Atmore took the portfolio, the Board of Governors of the Seddon Memorial Technical College communicated with him and placed the whole matter before him. The Minister's reply is the outcome of these representations.
