FUEL CONTRACT DENIED STATEMENT BY MR. COATES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. TE AROHA. Wednesday. " That "statement is contrary to fact ; n" contract has been let," said the Prim<' Minister, Mr. Coates, to-day when his attention was drawn to a cabled report from London stating the Sensible Heat and Distillation Company had secured a contract I'or supplying to the New Zealand railways 100,G00 tons a year, for five vears, of L and N residual smokeless fuel.
Mr. Gerald Hamilton, the attorney for the comps.nv in London, who is at present in Wellington, expressed surprise at the cabled message. He said the company offered to contract with the New Zealand Government for a supply of smokeless fuel for railway purposes, but the negotiations had not been completed on both sides.
