ROYAL SHOW CARNIVAL.

THE OPENING GALA TO-DAY. I . PROGRAMME FOR THE WEEK. MANY IMPORTANT FIXTURES. NORTH SHORE ENTERTAINMENT. Carnival Week in connection with Auckland's first Royal Show will commence today. The inaugural entertainment will be provided by residents of the combined North Shore Boroughs, who will hold a gala day and entertain visitors, show judges and officials. The proceedings during the day will be filmed. The Royal ' Show will be officially opened to-morrow by His Excellency the Governor-General, who will be entertained at luncheon by the executive of the Royal Show Society. In the evening an important conference on land settlement will be held in the 1 Town Hall concert chamber. Each evening during the week there will be a variety of entertainments provided in tho city and suburbs. The manufacturers and retailers of the district are co-operating to provide a special display of New Zealand industries and a competition for the best shop window display is creating widespread interest. The city will be made gay with decorations and the principal streets and buildings will bo specially illuminated at night. Band music will be provided each evening. Pedigree Stock Arrives. The first special train bringing livestock 'exhibits for the show arrived from Falmerstoti North on Saturday. There were 41 trucks of pedigree stock from exhibitors in the Wellington, Wairarapa, Manawatu, Hawke's Bay, Wanganui and Taranaki districts. Some sheep from the South Island were also included. The animals were unloaded at the Remuera siding and were housed in the buildings provided for them at tho Epsom showground. A rest tent for lady visitors from a distance is being established at the showground by the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. It will be placed near the grandstand and Mrs. W. J. Poison, president, and Mrs. H. M. Jackson, treasurer of the division, will be in attendance. A meeting of those interested in the division, the chief object of which is the improvement of conditions for women on the land, will be held at the Farmers' Union offices, Wyndham Street, on Wednesday at 2.30 p.m. A meeting of those interested in meat control will be held at the Chamber of i Commerce on Wednesday morning. The meeting, which has been arranged by the Auckland branch of the Farmers' Union, will be attended by Mr. D. Jones, chairman, and Mr. R. S. Forsyth, of the j Meat Control Board. Evening: Municipal Band programme, Albert Park. Pipe Banc) parade, Karangahape Road and Queen Street. Port Auckland Baud .assembles at the Civic Square, marches down Queen Street and plays opposite Harbour Board office until 9 p.m. Searchlight display from the forts. To-morrow at the Show. Saturday.—Shop displays. OtahuhU Trotting Club's meeting. Evening: Port Auckland Band parade in Queen Street and Karangahape Road. Municipal Band, Town Hall. CATTLE FROM TARANAKI. DEATH OF A FRIESIAN COW. Taranaki cattle to compete in the Royal Show arrived from New Plymouth on Saturday morning by the Rarawa. They include a group of Jerseys from the herds of Messrs. G. H. Bell, F.. W. Cornwall, H. C. Sampson and D. Ballantyne and Friesians from the herds of Messrs. Marchant and Sons, Baldwin and Sons, J. J. Walker and H. E. Johnson, all wellknown breeders of pedigree stock. An unfortunate incident during the trip the death on board of Mr. Walker's Friesian cow, Viola Beauty Burke. In company with the other animals she had been comfortably bedded, midnight she was found to be suffering from milk fever and the absence of a remedial outfit rendered her condition <serious. Everything possible under the circumstances was done for tiie animal by the farmers on s board, assisted by members of the crew, but despite the attention the cow died within half an hour of the vessel's arrival at Onehunga. Viola Beauty Burke was bred by Mr. J, H. Parkinson and was by Major De Kol Burke from Viola. The dam was . one of the first Friesian cows in New Zealand to put xip a record of over 6001b. of butter-fat, ' which she did when 13 years of age. Viola Beauty Burke had a record of well over 6001b. of fat and this season had consistently given up to 901b. of milk a day. The cow was not. insured,, but Sir. Walker has three heifers and a- male from her, so that the strain has not been lost. , . , .
