DISPLAY OF FIREWORKS.

CELEBRATION OF GUY FAWKES PAGEANT AT NARROW NECK. Guy Fawke's Day was celebrated with all the customary enthusiasm at the Narrow Neck camp on Saturday evening, the event having been postponed from the previous week owing to wet weather. The weather on Saturday was fine, and conditions were ideal for outdoor amusement. ' ; Shortly after 7 p.m. over 2000 people had gathered on the parade grounds, and soon every point of vantage was occupied. When darkness came two powerful searchlight beams swept in all directions, turning night into day wherever they were focussed. The historical representation of the first Guy Fawkes Day was very well executed, and all the actors in the little play lent a touch of realism by their excellent make-up and grotesque gestures. ' Considerable amusement was caused when Guy Fawkes was hoisted from the gallows on to the bonfire. Several prods and digs were necessary before the limp and crestfallen traitor, amid loud cheering, finally subsided into his' "fiery grave. • : It ; is probably a long time since Aucklanders have witnessed such a'varied and spectacular display of fireworks. Some of the most expensive types of rockets were sent soaring into tlie sky, and magnificent effects were produced. Representations of the Huka Falls, Prince of Wales' Feathers, a volcano in eruption, and pohutukawa trees in bl6om were striking features of the display. Another " interesting - feature of the pageant was provided by the 18-pounder guns, manned by members of the 3rd Battery, N.Z.F.A., at present in camp at Narrow Neck. Salvos of shells were hurled in to the harbour, great excitement being caused when a large spout of water signified that the target had been hit. Other attractions included dancing, community singing, competitions and sideshows, all of which, were well patronised. The display was arranged by members of the. law, insurance and banking professions to' assist the funds of the Artillery Queen Carnival. The co-operation of the Defence Department did much to ensure success, -i : ~ , , >
