YACHTING MISHAP.
AN OPEN BOAT CAPSiZEsi SMART RESCUE OF THE CREW, The 14ft. open sailing boat Avis capsized on the Manukau Harbour on Saturday afternoon while taking part in the Manukau Cruising Club's opening race of the season. A very hard south-westerly wind was blowing, and after proceeding a shetS distance down the harbour the Avi% which was close reefed, was caught in.® squall and overturned. Her crew, Messrs. H. Morgan (owner), H. ParJo hurst, R. Quinlan and D. Whitcombe, adl managed to hold on to the boat assistance arrived. A heavy sea was running and bobM difficulty was experienced in picking ttfe crew up. Messrs. Parkhurst and Quiti* lan were rescued by Commodore's Smith's launch Salome; Mr. Whitcombe, who started to swim ashore, by tho launch Alma, and Mr. Morgan by a dinghy from a passing yacht. The Avis was towed into shallow water by the Salome. After the capsize the officials jn charge of the racing decided to cancel the race and also other fixtures set down for Saturday owing to the unfavourable weather conditions.
