• RUATOREA SHOOTING ,CASE ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER MAORI SENT FOR TRIAL. 3 [BY TELEGRAM. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBORNE, Saturday. a In the Police Court at Ruatorea to-day '• Noema Kaiwai was charged with the at tempted murder of Thomas Joyce. Evidence given by Thomas Joyce wa 5 that he was suddenly confronted by Kai wai, who fired point-blank at him with shotgun. Witness immediately ducked 3 but received some of the charge in hi r back. Then he dodged into the manuk f scrub and Kaiwai fired again, but missed Witness then rushed Kaiwai and trifti 1 to get the gun from him, and accuse tried to strike him with the butt. Joyc s managed to get the gun and then rollei " down a bank. Kaiwai then ran away. 0 Other witnesses stated that shots hai 1 been heard, and that the girl with whor 3 Kaiwai had been living called out t< r accused to go inside. When he did no 3 do so, she took him away. Kaiwai, i 1 was stated, admitted that he had firei * two shots at Joyce. Formal evidence was given, severa 3 witnesses identifying the gun and ammu * nition, and stating that Kaiwai had bor • rowed the gun earlier in the evening 1 saying that he wanted to go duck-shoot > ing. 7 Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved hi; I defence and was committed for trial.
