STRUCK BY A TRUCK.
SHUNTER'S NARROW ESCAPE. [BY TELEGE.APH. —OWN CORBESPONBENT. ] PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday. A narrow escape from a serious accident was witnessed in the Palmerston North railway yards. While engaged in what is knowD as the " double shunt," during which the operator stands on one truck and when the brakes are applied lifts the hook, allowing the " kicked" truck to run on, a shunter named Worthington, not anticipating that the track following was being " switched" into a shed, crossed the rails toward the building and as he stepped over was struck violently on tho side by the truck. He was flung clear of the wheels in a semiconscious condition, and sustained injury to his head. After being attended by a doctor he was removed to his home, but was able to resume duty later. Three weeks ago Worthington was thrown from a rako of trucks on tho occasion of the accident which resulted in. tho death of D- Murphy. t
