FERRY SERVICE CEASES.
ST. HELIERS WIEK-OAY TRIPS • '. ' ••'' MOTOR-BUS COMPETITION. 't . NOTICE TO HARBOUR BOARD. Passenger traffic by the ferry boats winning in the St. HeUeru-Kohimarama Orakei service has fallen off to such an extent, owing to motor-bus competition that the Devonport Ferry Company has decided to discontinue the service as from November 2. This announcement was made yesterday in » communication from the company to the Auckland Harbour ; Board. In this letter it was stated that owing to the serious loss which the company was experiencing on this route it had been decided to withdraw the regular week-day service. The chairman of the board, Mr. K. K. Mackenzie, said he did not think the board should withhold its permission for the cancelling of the service. The company could not discontinue the service, without the consent of the board. Mr. C. G. Macindoe agreed that the .board should not object, mentioning that those who wished to travel by water would no doubt be catered for by other boats running between the city and the eastern suburbs. . It was suggested that the local authorities interested in the service should be communicated with, but one member remarked that the board could not compel the company to run the service at a loss. It was decided to receive the letter and to forward copies to the local authorities concerned.
