AUGUST CUSTOMS DUES.
INCREASE AT AUCKLAND.
EXPANSION IN FOUR MONTHS
COMPARATIVE FIGURES.
The highest monthly total for the present year in customs revenue collected at the Port of Auckland is shown by the duties collected in August. The returns show a considerable increase on those for July, and are very much higher than those for the corresponding month last year. This is due to heavy shipment* received during August, the expansion oi the import trade having been steadily since June. The amount collected last month was £174,083, compared with £140,852 in the previous month, an increase of £33,231; and. compared with £118,439 in August, 1921, an increase of £65,644. Taking the last four months, the total is £560,842, as against £435,632 _in the Mav-August period of 1921, an improvement for this year of £325,210, or over 25 per cent. The totals for the first eight months of 1922 and 1921 closely approximate, the advantage being with last year by a sum of £101,897. This is due to the large lead established during the first four mohths of 1921, a preponderance that the last four months has dona much to diminish. The following table shows the net customs returns for the first eight months of this year, compared with the corresponding returns for last year: — 1922. 1921.
