DROWNING AT MANGAWAI.

Information of the discovery on the beach near the Manga wai Bar, North Auckland, on Saturday, of the body of a man in an advanced state of decomposition was received yesterday by the Auckland police. An inquest was held at Mangawai yesterday, and a verdict of found drowned was returned. The remains were unrecognisable, and, so far, the police have no clue to the identity of the deceased.

A farm manager, Mr. R. Latimore, was drowned at Otara on Sunday. While fishing from rocks he was swept off by a breaker. He leaves a widow and four children.

COLLISION WITH MOTOR-CYCLE.

WAIHI GIRL INJURED.

[BT telegram.— CORRESPONDENT.] WAIHI, Monday. When cycling home from school this afternoon, Miss Dorothy Goodwin, daughter of Mr. Jesse Goodwin, a farmer at W'aihi Plains, collided with a motorcyclist and was thrown heavily to the road. She was picked up in an unconscious state, bleeding profusely, but regained consciousness about fifteen minutes later. The extent of her injuries is not yet known.

A ship's trimmer, Mr. Peter Metz, fell 14ft from the gangway while boarding the Ruahine, and was removed to the hospital. He was found to be suffering from fractured ribs, shock, and possibly internal injuries. ACCIDENT TO MOTOR-CYCLIST. COLLARBONE FRACTURED. [BY (TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAIHI, Monday. While riding his motor'bicycle in Kenny Street on Saturday afternoon, Mr. St. Clair Macdonald, of the Waihi Gold Mining Company's engineering staff, ran into a dog at the intersection with Devon Street. The cyclist was thrown heavily on the metalled road, and had his collarbone fractured.

DROWNED FROM A LAUNCH.

MISSING BODY FOUND. 1 [BT TELEGRAPH— CORRESPONDENT.] WEAKATANE. Monday. The body of Mr. Philip Orchard, contractor, who lost his life on Wednesday, February 13, was washed up on the Ohipi Beach, and was discovered yesterday. At the inquest this morning the coroner returned-a verdict to the effect that the deceased, was accidentally drowned by falling off a launch in a heavy sea. The funeral took place to-day. .

DROWNING NEAR PAPAKURA.

YOUTH SWEPT DOWN CREEK.

A youth, Frank Rawley, 19 years of age, was drowned in the Drury Creek, near Papakura, on Sunday. The deceased, who lived with his parents at Ramarama, was one of a launch party whose boat had stuck on a mudbank. He endeavoured to wade ashore, with a companion, hut lost his footing, and, being unable to swim, was swept down the creek and drowned.

A settler, Mr. A. Bradburn, who witnessed the occurrence from a distance, attempted to reach the youth, but failed. The body was recovered later and removed to Papakura. An inquest was held yesterday, a verdict of accidental death by drowning being returned.

FALL DOWN STEAMER'S HOLD.

DEATH OF WATERSIDE WORKER. An inquest was held yesterday by Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., concerning the death of Mr. Walter Readford, a married waterside worker, aged 50, of 20, Oliphant Street, Ponsonby, who succumbed at the Auckland Hospital on Wednesday to injuries sustained during the night. of February 7. as a result of a fall down a hold of the steamer Ayrshire. Evidence was given" that the deceased, who was engaged on the vessel, was seen near the Ayrshire at about 6 p.m. on February 7, but no testimony was adduced to show how he fell down the hold, on the floor of which he was found the following morning. Dr. Alexander M. G. Grant, senior resident medical officer alt the Auckland Hospital, said death was due to a fractured skull and a laceration of the brain, injuries which were consistent with a fall such as indicated in" the evidence. Witness operated on the deceased, who subsennentlv regained consciousness for about three days, but he did not refer to, the accident.

The coroner returned < a verdict m accordance with the medical testimony, and added that, there was no evidence to show how the deceased came to be in the bottom of the hold.
