BALLOT OF NATIVES.
WAIKATOS TO BE CALLED.
TWO HUNDRED TO BE D3AWN. [BT TELEGRAIH.'-OW'.J CORKESFOVDffiiT.
WELLINGTON, Monday. Tie Government statistician has been instructed to take a ballot of the First Division of native reservists in the Wai-k,-\to and • Maniapoto recruiting districts, for the purpose of supplying reinforcements for the Maori Contingents now serving in France. The position hitherto has been that the Waikato Maoris have stcod consistently aloof from voluntary recruiting. Lojal tribes have naturally felt aggrieved at the attitude of the Waikatos, but notwithstanding every effort made to 'nduce the latter to come forward, they have remained ariair.aril. The total number of First Division native reservists on the roll in the district is 420, and it is proposed to call up 200 in the first ballot.
The natives called up will have the same privilege of lodging appeals is Europeans. For the purpose of hearing these the following have been appointed a Native Military Service Board:—Mr. Charles E. MacCormick, Judge of the Native Land Court, of Auckland; Mr. John Ormsby, Otorohanga; and Pitiera Taipua, Otaki.
