GERMAN SOCIALISTS.
PLAIN-SPOKEN CIRCULAR,
SUBMARINE MURDERS.
COST OF VERDUN BATTLE.
Au.«t. and N.Z. Cable. LONDON. Augu?t 20.
The Social Democrats of Germany \ . have secretly circulated thousands i . of copies of an anti-submarine and | , anti-Government pamphlet in which , they denounce U-boat war as inter- j , national murder. The circular says : '. ■ Crazy German Imperialistic agita- ' , tors stupidly provoked a world war, j then added the futile submarine ' campaign in the spring of 1915. our : braggarts cracking jokes and threat- i ening to starve England by sub- ( marines. This was utter foolishness, j The blockade would require 100 ' submarines for every dozen the tier- ; mans are able to build. Even then ! the success of the blockade would j be doubtful. The campaign cul- ■ mutated in sending hundreds of i women and children to a grisly > death in the Lusitania, causing a j | world-wide cry of horror. The Gov- j ! eminent promises German victory, 1 j but it is more likely that we will re- j j peat the experience of Verdun, j j where more than 100.000 Germans j I were driven to death in order to taße I j two unimportant positions."
