PERSONAL CANVASSERS.
ONLY EIGHT VOLUNTEER.
ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL.
On-t.t eight persons volunteered yesterday for the work of completing th i city recruiting roll by personal canvass. One of tbo volunteers was a woman. As it was estimated that the services of at least 250 persons for three weeks would be required the chairman of the committee, Mr. J h' Gunson, states that the proposal must be abandoned. Following on a further communication from the National Recruiting Board. th« city committee decided at a general meet ing last Wednesday to proceed with the completion of the city roll, provided that sufficient people were available to make the canvass. In accordance with the committee s announcement, the secretary Mr 0. R. Hopn, was in attendance at Che lown Hair during two hours and a half yesterday afternoon, but, including offers by letter, only the eight volunteers re ferred to offered their services Commenting on the response to the comm.toes appeal Mr. Gunson said that obviously the first requirement was voluntary labour. i ( V lO . result « such that it will be absolutely impossible to proceed with 11,. propose he said. "An alternative suggestion which the committee has under consideration is to propose to the Recruiting Board that the work should be undertaken on similar lines to those on which the census is taken, the board undertaking the cost. The commit tee >s quite decked in its opinion that t does not devolve upon the city ratepayers to provide the money for this national undertaking.
