BOXING.

MEETING OF, NORTHERN-

ASSOCIATION.

THE EXHIBITION CONTESTS.

The annual mooting.of tho Northern Boxing Association was hold in the Sports Club last evening, Mr. J. A. Gillett presiding over a large attendance.

When the report and balance-sheet, which have previously been published, were read, Mr. F. Dyer took exception to certain amounts in the balance-sheet. Two payments, amounting to £15, ho contended, | were against the rules of the association. Further, ho made objections to the petty cash oxpeuded by the secretary, which he compared with that of the previous year. The secretary (Mr. Moss Bnllin) pointed cut that in reference to the payments, mentioned, it was the intention of the association to give the two people mentioned benefits during the coming season, and the amounts mentioned in the balance-sheet | would, of course, be deducted from their ! respective shares. With regard to the petty : cash statement, Mr. Ballin pointed out thai j the Keys-Summers match last year, being ; made in Australia, involved a considerably I greater expense than i! it had boon made j in New Zcniand. That, and other expenses, ! accounted tor any increase in the petty cash | account. A considerable amount of discontent was : expressed at the subjects mentioned by a small proportion of those present, but most I of those in the room wero agreed that whatever hati been done was for the good of boxing. Rcierence was also made to the fact that memuers lia<l occu kept in the Hark regarding the doings oi the aiatcn loruinuteo, and inat all mourners ot mat committee Had not been present when matcnes n-tre decided upon. Air. Ballin slated that notification was always given to members when a meting was to be hum. .\ quorum was always present, l and it certain members did not respond to , the invitation lhat was. not his faint. The : Match Committee had always reported the i business it had transacted to the general I committee. In regard to certain items in I the financial statement to which exception | was-taiten. Mr. Ballin pointed out that all j those items had been considered by the i {finance Committee and aitecßards approved, i Ihe auditor, who was present, iillimiej that j vouchers had been given tor all expenditure with the exi option of one very small j item, the pocuiiarilies of which he explained I satistactorily. Incidentally, it was pointed j out that the pas! year Lad been an exceptionally good one ilnanciaiiy. ] The chairman, in moving the adoption of . the report an- balance-sheet, congratulated I the association on its splendid financial posiI lion. the year, he stated, had been started ' with an overdraft of .WO, but had finished j with a bank balance of £161 Is Id. and the I sum of £207 on fixed deposit. As for the j committee, its members had proved that , they were the right men in the right place. I Mr. Page, in seconding slip adoption. j pointed out that the nast « ~,,-,., wf . s <|, 0 I most successful in the annals of the associ- ! ation. ! The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as fallows:-Patron. Mr. A. M. Myers, M.P.; president, Mr. G. Gillett; vice-presidents, Messrs P. B Grecnhourm, Lindsay Cook, J. E. Fagan. J. Hodgson. T. C. R. Thatcher, Murdoch McLean. F Diddams, J. L. Lemur 1 : honorary sccreiary. Mr. Moss Ballin; honorary 'rraeurer. Mr P. Greenhough; solicitor to association. Mr. E. J. Mahoney; Management Committee, Messrs. J. Brown, H Garo, J. Page, T. C. R. Thatcher. P. Burns, J. W Russell, P. Dyer, C. Saunders, M. Connelly, V. Peace, J. E. Fagan, C. Easigate, J. A. Gillett; honorary medical officers, Dr. W. S. Brockway, Dr. C- C. Murphy; honorary auditor, Mr. P. K. Fraser; honorary custodian, Mr. W. Arnold. Pursuant on a previous notice of motion, Mr. Moss Ballin moved:—"That the following be added to the rules of the association: " That the committee may, during any one season, devote a sum or sums not exceeding £50 for any charitable purpose or purposes.' " After some little discussion the motion was carried. The annual subscription to the association was fixed at 303, as previously. TJie matter of the ' Exhibition contract entered into by the association with Mr. Bris Doyle was brought up by Mr. Murdoch McLean, who said that a kind of stigma had been cast on the association by tho suggestion that it had not been carrying on the snort cleanly. Ho thought that full information should be givea to members so as to clear up any feeling that might exist that the association was not carrying on its affairs cleanly. Th« treasurer (Mr. P. Grecnhough) outlined the contract on lines similar to 111086 published in last Saturday's issue of the JIEBALH. .The proposal put forward by Mr. Doyle in his address to the association, he said, seemed a good one for the association- In addition to other proposals. Mr. Doyle had . said that after t'le Exhibition he would have no further use for the stadium ho was going to build to seat 6COO people, and this, it was understood, would become the property of the association which would thus secure a home of its own, and that would undoubtedly have been a good thin? for the association. The weak point of the contract was that it gave Mr. Doyle the right to assign his rights to anyone ho liked. The council had previously written to the association asking it to father a similar project in respect to Lanpford. MeVea. and Eeade, but when the council saw that the association had > very similar obierf in tiew it became indignant, and published a statement. Unfortunately. Mr- Greenhough concluded, a contract which certainly looked good did _n"t turn out the right way for the association. Mr. McLean pointed out that thoneh the transaction had not proved a financial success, the association could now do nothing. The provisions hid certainly b«on a little loo«e, bnt the a»^oci' f ion's bands were now tied until Juc* 0. The business acumen of those who had brought about the contract had perhaps been at fault, hut 'he committee would now hive to accept th* position. The Auckland Association, at least, ahso'ved from any suspicion of anvthine in the matter of unclean sport, a sentiment with which the majority of those present agreed.
