In selecting the class of fertiliser to be applied to a crop, the length of time during which the crop occupies the ground should be taken into consideration. It has considerable influence upon the economical use of fertilisers. Wheat, mangels, hops, and potatoes take a fairly long time to mature, and have seven or eight months during which they can assimilate their requirements of plant food. On the other hand, some other crops, such, for instance, as barley, mature more quickly, and, therefore, require an ample supply of quickly available nourishment
