On arable soil weeds are trespassers that should bo prosecuted with the utmost rigour of the law. Thev are thieving vagrants, to be expelled from the fields. The amount of water which is taken up by the weeds and evaporated from the surface of the leaves is very great. For instance, an average mustard plant pumps from the soil about 14oz, or seventh-tenths of a pint, per day; a sunflower 33oz< and so on.
