FORGERY AND THEFT.
CHARGES AGAINST OTAGO MAN.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— association.] DCNEMN, Monday. At the Police Court 'to-day. John Cecil Mercer, alias Cusack, was charged with forging a name on a cheque for £39, also with stealing the same cheque at Patearoa, and another cheque for £1 ss, a pocket-book, and a number of postage stamps, the property of Christopher Dags, hotelkeeper. The evidence showed that accused called on Alexander Garden, outfitter, and purchased goods valued at £13 odd', tendering as payment the cheque for £39, and endorsed it in Garden's presence in the name of Dagg. After the evidence, accused pleaded guilty to forging, and not guilty to the theft. He was committed for sentence for ; forgery, and for trial for theft.
