NEW YEAR WEATHER.
Whenever New Zealanders are inclined to grumble at the weather of these Fortunate Isles, they would be silent if they gave a moment's consideration to the experiences cf other lands. Our droughts, our floods, our colds, and even * our storms, are liliputian when compared tojthose of Australia, America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. We are so ignorant of weather extremes that we complain the moment the skies are not wholly to our liking, creating grievances for ourselves where other peoples would see only cause for heart-felt gratitude. At the present time,, the whole of the Northern Hemisphere appears to be passing through an exceptional climatic depression, which is inflicting suffering, loss, and misery over the whole of Northern Europe, is desolating the sab-polar regions of America, and we may be sure is at its worst in the little-known Siberia of the Tsars. Climatic cataclysms are not infrequent in every great land area, our Australian neighbours having quite their share of climatic trouble. In New Zealand, however, and especially in Auckland Province, climatic variations are singularly small and equable conditions the almost invariable rule. The surrounding oceans guard us against great disturbances of temperature, and in addition our latitudes are ideal for moderate seasons. The High Commissioner's Office should make better known this peculiar climatic advantage, for when all is said and done there is nothing which conduces more to the enjoyment of living than a climate which leaves little to be desired.
