MEETINGS.

CITY SCHOOLS' COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Auckland Schools' Committee was held in the Nelson-street echool last evening, when there were present: Messrs. F. E. N. Gaudin (in the chair), W. Millar, J. C. Staples, J. W. Mayn, J. Trevcthiok, and J. S. Small (secretary). It was stated that Miss Kathleen A. Maughan had been appointed to Beresford-street school, Mr. Erio A. Watkin to Napier-street school. Miss Mary A. Whitakcr to Federal-street school, and Miss Vera D. Hosking to Federal-street school. The truant officer reported that during the month of February last there were 574 schools on his list, and of these 354 had sent in return*; 35 visits had been paid to schools and their rolls inspected, and 240 notices had been served on parents; 280 parents had been interviewed, and one had been convicted and fined. The amount of fines imposed during the month was £8 4s 6d. It was also reported that the notices served on parents had the result of causing better attendance of the children, In each cos« irregular attendants had been warned.

ASSISTANT-SCHOOLMASTERS' ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the , Assistant-School-masters' Association was held on Saturday evening, when there was a largo attendance of members. Debate, with considerable discussion, was held on two current matters of interest. In the first, with relation to the status and payment of mala and female assistants in schools, the leaders were Messrs. Campbell, Atwood, Law, and Crosby. The second title was, ■ " Are the New School Hours a Change for the Better?" and the leaders were Messrs. Wooller, Green, Moore, and Mase* field. As the time, was too short to allow of full consideration, the matter waa left to be decided at the next, meeting. A musical programme was supplied by Meoxa. Hill, Atwood, Skinner, Law, Warren, Wooller, T. Jones VcTjincs and p. Wilson.
