SPORTING.

NOTES BY PHAETON. Matters in connection with the Auckland Cup continue in a quiet state, and no marked alteration need bo expected until the remainder of the visiting division reach the scene. When Abcrbrothock landed at Ellerslie on Saturday, he ruled favourite, but the- son of Papakura weakened yesterday as a result of his gallop during the morning, when ho showed symptoms oS soreness. Taskmaster is alto apparently a little leg weary', and this has caused an impression to be formed that the son ot Treadmill will be reserved for the Derby. Roosevelt looks very well, and a good raco is to bo anticipated from liim. There can bo no question of the Menschikoff gekliuj having made a vast amount of impru»t:U»onc since he was sold out of Auckland. Indeed ho could hardly be recognV-'d as Hie same horse. The Auckland-bred pony Norma (by Musketry), who is now racing in Victoria, was sent out an odds-on favourite for the Galloway Date of 250sovs (five furlongs), run at Richmond on the 4th inSt. The presumed good thing, however, went down, Yalca (by Preston) defeating the Auckland mare a short head. The New Zealand-bred Waihuku (by San , Fran Va), who was purchased in October last, and transported to Australia, won a Jumpers' Flat Race in Victoria recently, beating a field of half-a-dozon. Tho Auckland-bred gelding' Annapolis continues his victorious march in West Australia. On the 4th inst. he scored a victory in the December Stakes, run at wcight-for-age, over a mile and three furlongs. Final payments for the Auckland Cup, Great Northern Foal Stakes, Great Northern Derby, 15th Royal Stakes, together with acceptances for the Trial Handicap, Robinson Handicap, Nursery Handicap, and Christmas Handicap fall due on Friday next, at nine p.m. Frank Wootton, who has accepted a retainer of '£2500 from Lord Derby for next season, is credited with having received upwards of £7000 in riding fees during the season just closed. In all probability an additional £1000 and £500 for first and second claims on his services will further enhance his princely income. Nominations for the principal events of tho Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, and which embrace the Takapuna Cup of 400sovs, Stewards' Handicap of lOOsovs, and T.J.C. Handicap of 200sovs close on Friday next, at nine p.m. Mr. S. Green, of Victoria, who was recently on a visit to Auckland, expressed a wish to effect the purchase of Lady Hester (dam of Master Soult) and her colt foal by Soult. Lady Hester still remains the property of Mr. H. R. McKenzie. Scotty is looking in capital health to attack his summer engagements, and the veteran may get on tho winning list again before long. , Naurad, lis., was, by an oversight, omitted from the handicap in tho Eden Trot, to be decided at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting. Silkweb has been scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Summer Meeting. Nominations for all events to be run at the Whangarei Racing Club's annual race meeting close on Friday next, at nine p.m. Acceptances in connection with th© Thames Jockey Club's Summer Meeting close on Friday next, at nine p.m. I Advocate continues to bowl along attractively, as also do Ngapuka and First Gun. INTERPROVINCIAL GOSSIP. [bt telegbaph.—own correspondents ] * '< ' WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The chestnut colt First Battery is only a pony, but he is a good one. .On the first day of the Woodville meeting he got away badly, but ran a good raco, while on the second day, when he got a better start, he cantered home ahead of his field.. He is tho first of the Field Battery youngsters to win a race. * The successes of Theodore and Kilindini at Woodville , have attracted attention to their Railway Handicap prospects, and backers are at present worrying as to which is the better of the pair. Probably the latter will be the stable selection. Reumao is to be given a brief spell from active work. He has had a strenuous time during the past six weeks, and has proved himself a really good horse by racing consistently. Gold Lace, winner of the Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton, is being given an easy time just at present, and she will. not be raced again before the Wellington Cup meeting. p WANGANUT Tuesday. The acceptances received for the first day of the Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting, to bo held on Thursday and Saturday, the 16th and 18th inst., are largo enough to warrant the prediction that given fine weather the gathering will be a very successful one. It will be the first meeting held by the club at which the totalisator will bo in commission, and hence there is every prospect of its being more popular with the public. . There should be some excellent sport provided, as a very good class of horses are engaged. Since his return from Auckland Coroneted has freshened up, and is now going along nicely in his preparation for the Manawatu meeting. For some reason he did not show his best form in Auckland, but may do better at the Christmas meetings. Regulation has broken down, and this fine mare has probably run-her last race. It was in 1902 that she opened her racing career by winning the Cobden Handicap at Greymouth, and she proved very speedy, scoring many successes on the flat. Later on she showed, that. she- could jump, and. it was only recently stated that she was probably as good as Compass' over tho little sticks. She wound up her career by winning the hurdles at Waverley last month. Percy Coffey had spent a lot of time in getting her back to form after a long absence from the track, and it is hard luck that he should lose her services when she appeared likely to gain further victories. Tho many friends of Mr. R. E. Mcßae, the well-known Hawera sportsman, will be sorry to hear that ho has been rather seriously indisposed during the past 10 days. The St, Clemonts— Ran mare Nicotine, is now located hero as a member of Percy Coffey's team. She is in fairly good form now, but had the bad luck to get off very slowly in both her races at Feilding, where she was strongly supported each day.

CANTERBURY. Tuesday. Silkweb was seriously injured while taking part in the Flying Handicap at the Christehurch Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, portion of one of his hoofs being cut off. His trip to Auckland will have to he abandoned, and it will be somo time before he races again. Genius, who won tho Maiden Plate at the Christehurch Racing Club's meeting, is art Australian-bred three-year-old by Acumen— Sihambra, by Gossoon Spice. Ho is a very likely sort that will win again shortly. . R. J. Mason will leave for Auckland at an early date with Armlet, Miss Mischief, and Danube, all of whom are galloping well at present. Another of Mr. Greenwood's horses, Formeden, will be sent to Palmorston North for tho classic events. Messrs. Stead Brothers are having an unlucky experience at present. Nautiform broke down while taking part in the Criterion Handicap last week. Ringdove, Ormulu, and Sunburnt have all boon causing some anxiety, while nearly all the team are suffering from colds. There will be no representatives from the stable at the Auckland meeting, but Ristori may bo sent to the Manawatu fixture.' J. McCombe was granted a trainer's license last week. I understand he intends to make shift to Palmerston North. Ho has at any rate disposed of his property and furniture at Riccarton. Glenculloch having completed his stud season will be sent to Stonyhurst this week, and Gravitation will be brought down from there with a view to going into W. Clarke's stable to bo prepared for the autumn racing Prim put up an attractive performance when she won tho Dominion Handicap at the Christehurch Racing Club's meeting. She is very -well at present, and may score again at an early data.

:'••";• ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. *A large number of horses were ~ worked at Ellerslie yesterday morning, trainers patronising the tan. and sand tracks and the course proper, the latter of which is now somewhat firm. The Choketiore horses, Tenterhook" and Full Sail, opened proceedings.with a six-furlong flutter, the former showing to most advantage in lm. 20s. Wild West ran away from Hyperion from a standing start, covering: "five furlongs in lm. 5 2-ss. The Cup horse Taskmaster was'associated with Sharpshooter over six furlongs, run in lm. 21 3-55., there being little to choose between the pair. Waimangu again proved too solid for Saul a Rosa, leading the latter home in a seven-furlong tussle encompassed in lm. 33 l-ss.— a good gallop. Advocate, looking well, had First Gun and Elysian as companions in a trial over nine furlongs, which took 2m. 10 2-ss. The trio trotted once round, and then set out on the second circuit, which was covered as above, Advocate finishing in front of First Gun. with the Derbv colt beaten off. ElyStan again performed in a sour fashion, having to be urged on with a stock whip. Duma had the best of Hnmadrvcd and Muscadine in a fourfurlong sprint, accomplished in 52 3-s*. Rimlock was much too good for .Miss Stella over a similar distance, which took lm. lCs. The Cup horses Abcrbrothock and Roosevelt were assisted by Kangikura in a jaunt over nine furlongs. Going well within himself, Roosevelt finished in front of Rnngikurn, with Aberbrothoek beaten off lame. The latter was not too good in front on pulling up, and may not stand much more work on the hard going. Roosevelt's time was 2m. 9 2-ss. Prophet was responsible for a gallop over the same journey in 2m. 10 3-ss. Coninna beat a companion badly over live furlongs run in slow time. Lucille finished in front of the Komula colt at the end of five furlongs in lm. 10s. Tamaiimpo had Tarlna scratchint: nt the finish of five furlongs run in lm. 5 4-ss. Sea Elf sprinted five furlongs in lm. 10s. Lady Dot, from a standing start, ran four furlongs nicely in 53 3-ss. Wenonah, Solus, and Poletlers sprinted.- Poictiers Is a two-year-old by Obligado— of whom something smart may be anticipated before long. Lloyd's, who was joined in the latter stages by Rob the Ranter, ran six furlongs in lm. 21 4-ss. The nice-looking His Highness covered halfa-mile In 555. llauparaha and Royal Scotland left the last six of seven furlongs behind in lm. 21s. Lieutenant Soult and a mate ran five furlongs in lm. 9 2-ss. Celtic and Zinnia'had a ding-dong finish over half-a-mile in 52 2-ss. on the tan. Apellon and Turbine fluttered over four furlongs at top. Mai--ora was given a fast sprint. Cvmri was sent once round in 2nt. 2 2-ss. Maheno'nnd Cambrian, from a standing start, ran five furlongs in lm. 7 3-55., the former having the best of matters. Kgapuka, assisted in the first part of the journey by old Scotty and over the latter portion by Tattoo, ran a mile and a-quarter on the sand in 2m. 17 2-55.. and once round in 2m. 3 2-ss. The Cup horse went nicely. Kilwinning, who is likely to win a race at the meeting, was not over-exerted. Te Aroha worked on the sand, but was not given a heavy task. Hoanga, Don Quex, Pierre, and Coch-y-Bondhn had a turn over the hurdles, the quartette coming home in that order. Armagh and First Barrel were also sent over the battens, the former leading all the way. Shrapnel was sent a circuit on the tan in lm. 575. Lady Patricia and Cuiragno accomplished once round in 2m. bx. Dawn, Sir Artegal, Coromandel, Totika, Kakama, Dogger Bank, All's Well, Mirs Advance.
