FOOTBALL.

This afternoon at Alexandra 'a football match will bo" played between teams chosen from the artillery and infantry services' of the Auckland "Volunteer'. Garrison. The proceeds will bo handed to -.SergeantAlaior W. J. Morgan, who was accidentally shot through the leg at. the Pentose rifle range some weeks ago, and as the cause is a deserving one, and the game promises to bo well contested, there should be. a good attendance. ;V ■ } THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM IN ENGLAND. The New Zealand Rugby representatives have now got through about half the programme mapped out for the- tour through Great Britain. They have played ami won 14 matches, and though the scores in the last two or three fixtures have fallen short of the huge totals piled up in the earlier matches, it is quite clear that they are evidently still well in front of the teams opposed to them as exponents of the- Rugby code. As the report to hand is somewhat meagre, and heavy rain fell throughout-last Wednesday's match against Surrev— by the colonials by 11 point, to nil—one can hardly arrive at.-the merits of the opposing side. It is, however, quite clear that the New Zealanders had all tho b?st of tho deal in the second spell, and as they pressed almost continuously, tho chances" are that the. scores would have been a larger one had our galloping backs not been hampered by r. greasy ball. The total number of points scored by our representatives to date is 460, an average of just on 33 points per match, while but 15 points have been registered against them. '.This huge total is made up of 52 goals, 48 tries, and two penalty goals; while the score against them are a goal from tho field (dropped goal), a in*, a goal, and a. penalty goal. To-day the Now ' Zealanders . play the Blackheath team, which was not up to its usual standard last season, though it is,- of course, possible that a stronger combination may be -placed in the field this Year." On Tuesday next they meet the Oxford University team, and on Thursday the Cambridge University fifteen. Last season Oxford defeated Cambridge by 3 goals and 1 try (18 points) .to 2 goals and 1 trv (13 noints), the match being one- of the principal events of the year outside the internationals. The ; result of the matehos between the colonials and tho 'Varsity teams will, therefore; bo awaited with interest. The results of the matches played by tho New Zealanders are. as under: — September 1C: Against Devon County—Won by eight goals, four tries, arid one penalty goal (55 points) to a potted goal (t points). • September 20: Against CornwAll—Won by lour Seals, seven tries (41 points) to nil. -.- .
