THE MANAPOURI IN A GALE.

A PERILOUS EXPERIENCE.

LIVE STOCK KILLED. The Union Company's steamer Manapouri, which left Auckland for Tonga on November 16, had a somewhat thrilling experience shortly after leaving port. It will be remembered that on that date a heavy easterly gale prevailed, during which the s.s. Rotokino, bound from Fiji to Auckland, had her rudder broken, and only reached port £ iter a very trying experience. The Manapouri fell in with the same gale, and was hove-to for about 32 hours iff the Barrier. The steamer was thrown over almost on her beam ends by the severe weati er, and the whole of her cargo of He stock, consisting of 10 head of cattle, 44 she;p, and a number of pigs, were killed. The steamer's decks were continually flooded with water, and the saloon, officers quarters, etc., were also flooded. So terrible was the wind and sea, that at times it was thought that the fteamer would go completely over and fot:nd:r, and the escape from disaster is said to have been an extremely narrow one.
