The newly-formed Anti-Chinese Association convened a public meeting, at which it was resolved to ask the Government to stop the further immigration of Chinese, East Indians, and coolies for a number of years, or, if that is impossible, to raise the polltax to £100.

The Academy of Fine Arts will be opened to-morrow by Sir J. Prendergast, in the absence of the Governor.

Nelson, Friday. At a meeting held last night strong indignation was expressed at the proposal to vary the Midland Railway contract, and it was resolved to send a deputation to Wellington on the subject. CHRISTOHOROH, Friday. The General Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association decided to recommend that the duty on imported binder twine should be abolished. Dr/NEDiN, Friday. Among the effects of a man who died in the north end of the city this week were £400 found sewn in the waistcoat.

The contest in the two wards of the city excited considerable interest. Mr. McGregor defeated Mr. A. H. Burton by a majority of 1.'14 for High Ward. Mr. A. Morrison was elected for Bell Ward, polling 165 more than Mr. A. S. Adams.
