CORRESPONDENCE
FIKE PKOTECTION. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The fire in the Karangahape-road this morning shows the absolute necessity of having either a hoße reel or coils of hose on the higher levels of the city. By the time the men of the Fire Brigade have dragged the heavy hose reel to the scene of the fire, it haß generally dono its worst, and the men are too exhausted (especially in the summer) to cope with the foe. I would suggest that coils of hose, or better still a a light hose reel, such as I see iin the New Zba*land Insurance Company's premises, be kept in the Kara'ngabhpe-road,- Pomionby, and near the Choral Hall. - In case of need, these could bo run down into the city, to supplement the hose, if a fire occured there, with much greater easo than they can be carried up the hills from the station in Albert-street. 1 have aleo heard that tbe insurance companies recommended to the City Council long sinso that a hose reel should be kept near the end of the wharf, so as to be always available in case of any of the shipping or wholesale warehouses taking fire.—l am, &c., Auckland, 17th August, 1&83. Akgus.
