Kenneth Kerr, editor of a local paper called Facts, and Charles Webb, proprietor of the Standard, and printer of Facts, for an article in last Friday's issue of Facts, relating to the Land Company's doings. Negotiations are proceeding between the Wellington Meat Expott Company and the Union Company to have the Waihe and some other small steamers fitted up with freezing chambers, to convey carcases from Blenheim, Napier, New Plymouth, and Wanganui to here for export. I GREYMOUTH, Saturday. The body of a newly-born child was found this morning in 11-gh street South, Sawyer's Creek Bridge, alongside the road, wrapped ill calico and brown paper, with four halfcrowns tied in the corner of the calico. Medical evidence showed that the child had been born alive, and probably died from j neglect—the umbilical cord being cut with a [ blunt instrument, and, not having been j tied, haemorrhage ensued, and caused death. •At the inquest the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. The body was seen by a young girl on the day before, and although on the edge of the road, and in full view of passers by, it remained undisturbed until this morning. OHRISTCHTJRCH, Saturday, The Dunedin Gaol inquiry was continued at Lyttelton yesterday. Chief Warder Ferguson and other witnesses were examined, their evidence generally being similar to that previously received. The' inquiry will be resumed at Wellington on Monday. Sunday. The following entries were received last night for the principal event in the Hunt Club Steeplechases, fixed for August 2nd : Open Handicap of 100 sovs. ; 3 miles.— Herculas, Kosciusco, Canard, Melbourne, Bateman, Quamby, Ravenswood, Larry, Levant, Clarence, Barbary. Eight entries were received for the Hunt Club Cup, thirteen for the Tally-Ho Plate, and fourteen for the Hunters' Flat Race. At the annual meeting of the Farmers' Co-operative Association yesterday, a dividend of 7 per cent. wa3 declared. DUNEDIN, Saturday. The 'religious instruction classes, started by the local clergy, are fairly formed. The .Anglican ministers teach upon their own account. The classes are held in the morning. Mr. R. Wilson, Chairman of the recent meeting of consignees, who lost goods by the sre at the railway goods sheds, received the following telegram from the Minister for Public Works : —"Schedule of claims arising out of Dunedin fire, with report thereupon, will arrive by next mail from South, and will be considered without delay.—W. Johnston." Mr. James Marshall, the President of the Dunedin Jockey Club, died this morning. INVERUARGILL, Saturday. At a meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday, the Engineer stated that the cost of the work proposed in various ridings amounted to £84,822. The Council granted permission to the Tramway Company to extend northwards from the present terminus. Regarding the alleged case of leprosy amongst the Chinese at Round Hill diggings, it is stated that the supposed sufferer has cleared out.
