Scratch a German and You Find a Hor.

COTJNT Rantzau is only living up to the old reputation of the Hun for being a human hog. The Hun can be a clever military strategist, a fine fighter—behind: trenches■!—and in industrial and commercial pursuits can be as efficient, in methods as he is subtle. But one thing he never can be; ' and that is-r-a gentleman. lhe American delegates at the Peace Conference appear to have been somewnat surprised by the truculence and insolence and ill-manners generally of Count Rantzau. But the British, and French, who have had, m the past, rare opportunities for studying the Hun cock-fci-woop more closely, than have the Yankees, could not have been so gre'atly astonished by the typically Prussian boorishness of the chief German delegate. "Grattez le Russe et vous trouverez le- Tartare" (scratch a, Russian and you will find a Tartar) said Voltaire. * * * * But it is not necessary to scratch a German to discover his natural hoggishness. ''Schweinhund" (pig-dog) is how Fritz amicably entitles John Bull. But after the Rantzau incident John, in company with Uncle Sam together with the French and Italians, may well retort by leaving out the "bund" and. styling the Hun or pur© and simple hog. To tack on the "hund" in his case would be an insult to the whole canine The person in the horn spectacles will go down c to history as the incarnation of hoggishness.
