Roughly speaking, the object of the Peace Conference at Versailles is to bind the Devil for a thousand years. The Old Boy has cut up unusually the last four years, says "Life." It may be recalled that a certain leading statesman said that he had been sceptical of the existence of the Devil, but that the early incidents of the war had cured him of his doubts. The Adversarv has been on the loose, and still is " mighty active, especially in Russia. The celestial powers seem not to be bothering about him, and if he is to be tied up it looks as though we must look to ourselves to do it. That is the job which Prwie Ministers Lloyd •George and Clemenceau and President "Wilson are now handling. One can bear thousands of worthy people saying to themselves: This proposal to bind the Devil is radical and unsettling. It may be very bad for business. If it goes through, who knows whose turn will come next? In spite, however. of vested interests, the contract will have to be carried out. Mankind has too much at stake to let vested interests block the way.
