THE OAKS.

The attendance on Epsom Downs on Friday, the 25th of May, to witness the race between England's best fillies, was thin compared with that on the preceding Wednesday, and the threatening aspeot of tie weather in the morn-

ing doubtless kept many away who otherwise would have been present. The weather brightened, however, towards noon, and the afternoon was fine. Unlike the Derby, the Oaks was won by an outsider, Butterfly, being among the lowest in the betting at starting. The Oaks Stakes, of 50 soys. each, h. ft., for 3-yr-old fillies, Bst. 71b. each. The second to receive 100 soys. out of the stakes, and the winner to pay 100 soys. towards the police and regulations of the course, and 30 soys. to the judge. Last mile and a half. 156 subs. Allington was first off, followed by Vesta, and soon they were side by side, Seclusion, who got badly off, bringing up the rear. At the top of the hill Cheesecake was beaten and Seclusion began to run through her horses. Viatka led into the straight, followed by Bupee, Aurora, Avalanche, Contadina, and Butterfly. At the distance Avalanche was in front and Contadina second. Half way up the distance the winner came and won by half a length, two lengths between the second and third, a neck between the third and fourth.
