PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
Friday, December 8.
Present — All the members except Mr. Ward and Mr. Hough. Dr. Monro moved for a copy of the despatch from Sir George Grey to the Superintendent, which authorized his Honor to remit imprisonment and fines; and alao for a copy of the correspondence which passed between the Superintendent and the Judge relating to the remission of sentence passed upon certain prisoners at the late sitting of the Supreme Court. Mr. Cautlby inquired of the Provincial Solicitor whether it was the intention of the Government to bring in a bill to enforce the attendance of witnesses to give evidence before select committees of the Council. He thought such a measure highly desirable, io order that the Council might be able to obtain the best evidence on all subjects.
The Provincial Solicitor replied by saying, that the Government bad no intention of introducing a bill for any such purpose, considering that legislation on tbo subject was not called for.
Mr. Stephens referred to the Constitution Act, to show that the Council had do power to legislate for such a purpose.
