Racing Club's meeting, and a very large crowd again attended. The racing was good, the Fisher Plate being the most exciting event. Alawa's win was the third in -succession of the Fisher Plate, and it was applauded. The Steeplechase drew the biggest field since 1875. The results were Spring Handicap: Styria 1, Danaus 2, Golden. CUP MEETING. CHRISTCHURCH. Sat. The New Zealand Cup meeting open ed at Riccarton to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, and Lord and Lady Islington and suits; Mr. J. Carroll, ancL several members of Parliament were present. The course was in excellent order, though a trifle hard for tender-leggjed horses. The racing generally was interesting, and Bridge's win in the Cup was very popular. Bridge's time establishes a new' Australasion record, being two ffconds faster than Tartan's record of 3.27. Speculation was brisk, the investments totalling £27,422, x as . against £24,943 last year. Eighteen bookmakers were licensed at £2O 10s each, and 35 at'.'£lo 10s each. Cronstadt made the early running, but at the mile T>ost was joined by Los Angeles. who shortly after took charge and led into the straight. At the distance Bridge and Diabolo closed on the leader, and the formei - won a good race by a length and a half. Kopu was a length in front of Los Angeles, with Taskmaster«next. Time, 3.25.
