THE CITY WATER SUPPLY.

THE PROPOSED EXTENSIONS. At last night's meeting of the City Council the Mayor referred to the 'iiiestion of taking steps in connection wih the proposed waterworks extension scheme, for which the loan of £15,000 had been sanctioned by tlie ratepayers. Sutlicient time, 119 said, had already been lost, owin^ to unfortunate circumstances, ia regard to this work, and as it was likely lo be some time before they had a City Surveyor, he would ask the Council to allow him to eogage Mr T. Roberts to make the necessary preliminary suivey to test the proposed site and check the estimates already 'submitted to the Council. There was no need to allow the Councils works to remain at a standstill until they got a Surveyor— which might be another two moatbs, Cr Piper thought the estimates did not require any f urther testing. He also thought that they should get the money before they took any action. Cr Fairey moved and Cr Gray seconded, that a Committee consisting of the Mayor and Crs Mercer, W ebley, Hunter, Gray, and Piper, wait upon and confer with Mr Roberts in regard to the matter and report back to the Council. Cr Hunter thought that the official who was to carry out the work should be the one to te* r the site and cheek the estimates The responsibility would then be put on the right shoulders. He believed that as soon as,, the work was started there would be som9 opposition from the people residing in Brook Street Valley. They should then-fore get all necessary information before going on with the work. Cr Piper said it was not necessary tu engage a man to again tcet Mr JickeH'a figures (already approved by Mr Mestayer.) Cr Gray did not think it was necessary to again check the figures. Cr "VVebley thought that they should wait until they got a Surveyor, and let him tG3fc the site and go through the estimates, The Mayor said he suggested checking the estimates because the Council had already resolved, oa the motion of Cr Hunter, to have them checked. He thonght the work should be put in band at once. Cr Fairoy's motion was carried, Cr Piper dissenting. The motion of raising the loan for the waterworks was referred to the Finance Committee.
