THE CHEVIOT EARTHQUAKES.
LOSS OF LIFE fFEABED. CHKtSTCBURCH, February 14. While men were clearing a large slip caused by the Cheviot earthquake, on the BlulT road, they unearthed a swag which was identified as the property of John Connor, a single man aged 40, who worked for Mr Sloss. of the Cheviot, up to October 29th. Just before \he earthquake he was at Port Kobinson asfcing when the steamer Wakatu would leave for Christehureh, and was told she was not to sail that day. • He then shouldered his swag and left apparently for Mackenzie, and has not been seen or heard of since It is surmised that he was caught in the slip while passing under the cliffs when the mass fell. His body is expected to be found in the debris now being cleared. It is understood that the Government has arranged to purchase 8000 acres of the Parnassus estate, in the neighborhood of Cheviot. The Governor returned from Cheviot to-night.
