The Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade had their usual wet practice on Friday evening last. About 40 members assembled. The operations of the Brigade in Trafalgar and Hardy streets drew large crowds of spectators. The hos.e-reel gave general satisfaction. The hook and ladder carriage is expected by the 15th February. This evening the tenders for the new uniforms will be opened. When the Brigade appear in full dress they will create quite a new sensation in Nelson. The expenses of the Brigade will necessitate a liberal support on the part ot the public. The hose-reel was made by Messrs Hoyt, Chaplin & Co., of Dunedin. The drum is capable of carrying 500 feet of leather hose. It has sft. 6in. wheels, so that two men can handle it with ease when all the apparatus is in. It has a regulating wheel in front, connected with the tongue, to steady it when going backwards. The material is American ash and hickory, the spokes of Sydney bark. It is painted and finished in a very handsome manner. There was an entire suspension of business in Dunedin, on the 12th. Divine service was held in the Presbyterian churches, and attended by large congregations.
